Congratulations to Rachel Stonham

On Tuesday evening, at The Pump Rooms in Bath, Rachel Stonham (year 12) took part in the Bath Young Musician of the Year Award. She competed against four other musicians, each who had to give a recital of three pieces of music. Rachel performed on the violin and chose to play Beethoven: “Sonata 1”, Paganini: “Sonata 12” and Arnold: “Five pieces-Moto perpetup”.

While the judges were discussing the winner, Katherine Stonham (who won last year!) gave a recital on the piano playing Sonata by Antonio Soler and ‘Pagodes’ by Claude Debussy.

The judges unanimously voted Rachel the winner. The chief judge said that ‘Even while having to control the sensitive violin, with her double-stopped music from Paganini, and the rapport with her accompanist, her eyes were acting out the music and she communicated superbly with the audience.’

I believe that this is the first time in the 30 years this event has been running that two sisters have won in consecutive years.
