Year 5 Taster Days
Last week we welcomed around 550 Year 5 students from 17 different primary schools to experience a day at secondary school.
There was great excitement in the workshops where students, some for the first time, wielded a saw to create tea light holders whilst other groups cooked up some delicious pizzas or crafted a tile out of clay. In English, students used their descriptive writing skills to create new sweets for Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory and a variety of Humanities sessions included designing the perfect town, writing citizenship rules or discovering just ‘Who was John of Gaunt?’. Some Y5 had a chance to run around the school searching for pirate treasure whilst cracking codes and everyone had a short game of rounders. The groups who came on Friday were treated to a snippet of the school show ‘Verona High’ before learning one of the numbers and performing it on stage with the cast. We were also very fortunate that we had a mobile planetarium visiting for Y7 students and every group of Y5s had a chance to lie back and explore our solar system and beyond.
All the students engaged fully with the tasks, were extremely well behaved and showed excellent manners. It was a joy to spend the day with them and we look forward to welcoming them back to our Open evening in next term
