Parent Governor vacancy

Dear Parent or Carer,

“The John of Gaunt School is a unique, vibrant and highly successful school. The School has a strong reputation for both academic and pastoral excellence” It really is a great honour to be the current Chair of Governors.

Our governing body is responsible for the strategic direction and performance of our school. We do this by building a thorough knowledge of our school and our community, by supporting and constructively challenging the school, and by ensuring accountability and compliance. The governing body is made up of appointed (community), parent and staff governors.

A vacancy has arisen for a parent governor. Parent governors are elected by parents. With this vacancy the governing body is able to now invite nominations from those with parental responsibility for a student(s) at the John of Gaunt school. If we receive more than one nomination, then a ballot will be held. Due to the current circumstances we intend, if needed, to hold the ballot digitally and all parents will be given the opportunity to vote privately by email.

It is important that you understand that Governors do not need be experts in the field of education. What is crucial is that you have an interest in our school, the welfare of our students and a willingness to volunteer. I can assure you, that all nominations will be welcomed.

It is important that Governors have the ability to build relationships with a range of people, to work as part of a team, to question, to challenge and, significantly to support. Governors are required to read reports to understand data and to make judgements on the school’s performance.

Governors typically serve a four-year term and can continue to the end of this four-year term, even if your child/children leave the school.

We expect governors to:

  • attend termly meetings of the full governing body
  • sit on at least one committee and attend the meetings which are usually once per term
  • visit the school for monitoring purposes or school events at least three times per year
  • take on the role of link governor to at least one faculty or area of school provision
  • commit to attend training courses as required

In return, we commit to:

  • providing you with a structured induction
  • providing access to quality training via Wiltshire Council Governor Services
  • providing an experienced governor as a mentor

Further information can be found at and anyone wishing to discuss the role can contact me via  I welcome the opportunity to have an individual conversation with any parent/carer who may be interested.

In order to nominate yourself, please contact Eleanor Shergold, Clerk to the Governing Body, via or 01225 762637, who will send you an application form. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 7th July.

Kind Regards

David Whewell
